For the uninitiated, the Mazda CX-50, aka the 2022 Mazda CX-50, is one of three all-new crossover SUVs that the Japanese automaker will introduce over the next two years, as announced by Mazda in an October press release. The Japanese marque announced that it would be launching three all-new crossover SUVs in the CX lineup for the US market, namely, the CX-50, CX-90, and CX-70. It had said the Mazda CX-50 would be the first crossover to launch, followed by the CX-90 three-row SUV and finally the mid-size CX-70.

Mazda CX-50 teased

On November 8, Mazda USA posted a 13-second-long teaser video showing a mysterious crossover SUV carrying a kayak on its roof driving through a rainforest on its official Twitter and Facebook pages. We don’t get to see much of the CX-50 in the video. However, the text accompanying the video reads: “There is always a new terrain. The journey begins 11/15” and shows the date 11.15.21 toward the end, hinting at the launch date. Many publications have reported that the mystery crossover in the teaser is the new model line that will be called the CX-50, and we couldn’t agree more since Mazda itself had said in the press release that it would unveil the CX-50 in November this year.

What do we know about the Mazda CX-50 so far?

The 2022 Mazda CX-50 will be a compact crossover SUV that will share its underpinnings with newer Mazda models like the existing Mazda CX-30, Mazda3, and the all-electric 2022 Mazda MX-30 EV. The CX-50 will not be replacing any model. Instead, it will be sold alongside the upcoming 2022 Mazda CX-5 compact crossover in Mazda’s 2022 model lineup, although the CX-50 could be a more premium, lifestyle-oriented offering.

In the press release, Mazda said that the CX-50 production will begin in January 2023 at the new Mazda-Toyota factory called Mazda Toyota Manufacturing USA in Huntsville, AL. This suggests the CX-50 could arrive at dealerships, including us, sometime in the first half of next year.
